This launch reflects a broader industry shift toward agent-based AI capable of carrying out multi-step business processes with minimal step-by-step supervision. Earlier this year, Anthropic and OpenAI have converged on a similar architecture: a persistent cloud agent, accessible from any device, that breaks tasks into steps and runs largely on its own.
But Grokbot works a bit differently than Claude Cowork or ChatGPT Work. Instead of assigning tasks, users build a roster of specialized bots - one for email, one for YouTube outlines, one for deal negotiation, and a catch-all for everything else. Users select more than one bot for a task, or pull an additional bot into an existing conversation mid-stream, and the bots collaborate on whatever's been asked without requiring user input or supervision.
Each bot runs on its own persistent, always-on virtual computer in the cloud, complete with a browser, file access, and its own logins. This lets it log into websites and applications just like a human would, which means it can work with services that don't have official APIs or MCP integrations - it simply interacts with the interface the same way a person does. Because the bot has its own machine in the cloud, it keeps running routines and monitoring tasks even after the user closes the app or shuts down their own PC. The task continues regardless of whether the user's computer is on.
Anything a bot does can be scheduled as a recurring routine, either by describing it conversationally in chat or by manually adding one through a plus-icon menu.
When a bot hits a step requiring credentials, like logging into LinkedIn, for instance, it hands control back to the user via a "take over" button, lets them enter the login manually, then resumes once the user signals it's done. Beyond direct browser use, bots can also connect through plugins (Notion, Gmail, Google Drive, etc.), and prompt the user to authorize a connection the moment it's needed rather than requiring upfront setup.
Users can watch exactly what a bot is doing in real time through a screen-share view of its computer - desktop, browser tabs, terminal, whatever's open. There's also a "teach a task" mode, which means Grok Bot can learn workflows through demonstrations. To teach it a new process, it is enough to show it once how a human performs the task. The bot records the user walking through a workflow step by step and turns it into a repeatable skill it can run on its own afterward.
Grok Bot has a memory function. It retains information from previous conversations and factors in corrections made by the user when it returns to unfinished work. This is part of what gives it an added layer of autonomy. xAI says that over time, Grok Bot should become more proactive and better at recognizing when a task needs human approval. The likely mechanism: as the bot accumulates a history of user corrections, it learns which types of decisions this particular user tends to want a say in and can flag those proactively, rather than acting without checking or asking permission for everything.
Notably, there's no option to select a specific model or switch on a deep reasoning mode - the tool handles that choice on its own, behind the scenes.
The mobile app mirrors the desktop experience exactly, including the ability to watch a bot's screen and take control of it right from a phone. Opening the app on your phone, dictating a task by voice, and handing it off to whichever bot is best suited for it is the type of convenience many users will find especially appealing.
Grokbot's core strength is that it figures things out with minimal hand-holding - give it a goal, not a step-by-step process, and it fills in the how.
